Kitchen Tools to Make This Recipe Easy Peasy

To whip up these delightful bites, you won’t need much — just a few trusty kitchen tools, much like the ones my grandma used when teaching me the joy of homemade snacks:

  • Plastic Wrap: Essential for shaping and rolling the salmon so everything stays neatly in place. The plastic wrap acts as your guide, keeping the roll tight and ensuring that the filling doesn’t spill out. This tool is indispensable for creating evenly sized roll ups that look as good as they taste.

  • Sharp Knife: To slice the roll ups with precision, ensuring each piece is perfect for serving. A sharp knife will make clean cuts, preserving the integrity of the roll ups and making them look as good as they taste. Investing in a good quality knife can make all the difference when preparing delicate dishes like this one.

  • Mixing Bowl: For blending the cream cheese filling smoothly and evenly. This bowl will help you mix the ingredients thoroughly, ensuring that each bite is infused with flavor. A sturdy mixing bowl is a kitchen staple that makes preparation efficient and hassle-free.

  • Cutting Board: Provides a stable surface for slicing the cucumber and avocado into thin, even strips. A good cutting board will prevent slipping and make it easier to achieve those perfect, uniform slices. Opt for a non-slip board for added safety and ease of use.

How to Make This Recipe Easy Peasy

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. smoked salmon
  • ½ cup whipped cream cheese
  • 2 Tbsp green onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 small Persian cucumber, sliced into thin strips
  • ½ of an avocado, sliced into thin strips
  • Everything But The Bagel Seasoning (EBTB)

For the citrus soy sauce (optional):

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp water
  • 1½ tsp mirin
  • 1 Tbsp green onion, sliced thin

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: Stir the sauce ingredients together in a small bowl and keep it chilled in the refrigerator while you prepare the salmon rolls. This tangy sauce complements the roll ups beautifully, adding an extra layer of flavor. The citrusy notes balance the richness of the salmon, creating a harmonious taste profile.

  2. Mix the Filling: Mix the cream cheese, green onion, and lemon zest together in a small bowl then set it aside. These ingredients create a creamy, flavorful base that pairs perfectly with the smoked salmon. Feel free to adjust the lemon zest to your liking for a brighter flavor.

  3. Assemble the Roll: Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on the counter and sprinkle it with Everything But The Bagel Seasoning. Then, lay your smoked salmon pieces over the seasoning to form a small rectangle. (Make sure to overlap the salmon slices slightly.) This step ensures that the salmon is the perfect size and shape for rolling. The seasoning adds a delightful crunch and burst of flavor to each bite.

  4. Add the Filling: Spread your cream cheese mixture over the salmon. Then place your sliced cucumber and avocado in the center of the rectangle. Very carefully, use the plastic wrap to help roll the salmon over your cucumber and avocado and continue rolling until you reach the other side. The plastic wrap will help you create a tight, even roll. Take your time with this step to ensure a neat and tidy roll.

  5. Chill and Slice: Place your salmon roll in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to firm up slightly. (This will make it easier to cut.) When you’re ready to eat, take the roll out of the freezer and slice it to your preferred thickness. This chilling step ensures that the roll holds its shape when sliced. For best results, use a sharp knife to make clean, even cuts.

  6. Serve and Enjoy: Serve with your citrus soy sauce (or make thinner slices and eat with your favorite crackers). This dish is as visually appealing as it is delicious, making it the perfect starter for any meal. The vibrant colors and enticing aroma are sure to whet your guests’ appetites.
